PAN Nigeria Limited, (previously known as Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Limited) which has remained a milestone in Nigeria’s automobile industry, was conceived in 1969 by the Federal Military Government under the leadership of General Yakubu Gowon as part of the national industrialization strategy aimed at developing local automotive manufacturing capacity and reducing dependence on vehicle imports.
In the build-up to actualizing this vision, sixteen reputable global vehicle manufacturing companies were invited to submit proposals for the establishment of a vehicle assembly plant in Nigeria. Based on the prevailing acceptability and demand for Peugeot vehicles at the time, the proposal submitted by Automobile Peugeot, France was approved on May 7, 1971, paving the way for the establishment of a domestic vehicle assembly operation.
The Kaduna-based vehicle assembly plant, one of the most historically significant automotive facilities in Nigeria, was commissioned on March 11, 1975 by the then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon. Vehicle assembly operations commenced shortly thereafter on March 2, 1975, with an initial installed capacity of 60,000 vehicles per annum.
By the 1980s, production capacity had increased to approximately 90,000 vehicles per annum, supported by a workforce of over 2,000 employees. At inception, the company played a great role in Nigeria’s industrial development, achieving about 37 percent local content through extensive engagement with local suppliers.
In November 2006, the company was privatized in line with the Federal Government’s agenda to build a stronger, more competitive, and diversified economy. ASD Motors emerged as the successful core investor and assumed management control in January 2007.
Following operational challenges, the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) took over the company in 2012 to stabilize and restructure its operations.
As part of its long-term growth strategy, the company transitioned from a single-brand assembler to a multi-brand automotive manufacturing platform through technical agreements for the local assembly of additional vehicle brands.
This strategic evolution reflected PAN’s resilience, technical competence, and adaptability, and coincided with the adoption of the corporate identity PAN Nigeria Limited, highlighting its broadened scope and diversified partnerships.
In 2020, Nesbitt Investment Nigeria Limited, the emergent strategic investor took over the management of PAN, bringing renewed strategic focus and leadership to drive operational efficiency and market expansion.
Today, PAN Nigeria Limited operates as a diversified automotive manufacturing and mobility solutions company, serving government procurement programs, corporate mobility solutions, fleet operators, and retail markets nationwide.
The company also functions as a contract manufacturing platform for potential assemblers and new entrants seeking to leverage PAN’s facilities, skilled workforce, and proven production infrastructure.
Beyond manufacturing, PAN remains committed to national development through job creation, skills transfer, technical capacity building, and strengthening local supply chains and content integration.
